Commissions.

2 min read
As some people might or might not have heard from me, I don't really know how to undertake commissions to save my life.

I don't really know how to handle transactions that are not based on MYR (Malaysian Ringgit), and during the times I have been rejecting commission requests was because I have no card that I can use for online transactions. Now that I do, I might be able to handle more transactions better given the available channels I can use with my debit card (such as PayPal, which I really ought to know how to use it by now).

Now the next question I'm wondering is: How should I charge for what kinds of commissions?

As much as I'd love to be ambitious in what I can offer, I'm mostly limited by time and availability (that is, when I'm not already occupied with matters outside of the canvas... including playtime, heh heh).

And of course, whether I'm interested in whatever I'm being asked to do.

... Looking at my somewhat barren and rarely-updated deviantArt page, I suppose it'll be ages before anyone notices this, no?

Plus I think my skills are going rusty yet again due to too much focus on schoolwork. Solo final year animation projects done within the schedule of a group work is a no-no, so if you happen to be taking an animation course and your final year project can be done in groups, do it in groups. Because you're going to be given a production timeline fitting for group work and doing solo isn't really fun when you want to have some time off it. As in, days where you just can forget you have a pending project at all.

You know what, I think I'm going to try to experiment with using journals as a compilation page for comic pages. You see, currently deviantArt doesn't provide a sane way for you to compile comic pages into "chapters", or easier said, a single deviation (other than making one really long strip perhaps).

Also provides a good excuse for me to actually use the journal than just pumping out deviations and let the journal rot each time.

So here goes. Though I don't know what's a good layout for a test. Left to right horizontal? Or vertical in order?

... I noticed that you can put stuff from your Sta.sh into your journals. Perhaps the "comic chapters" thing can work with that? I don't know. Maybe I'll try that next time.

Submissions.

Just a real short and quick entry for the sake of voicing a tiny nitpicking issue about dA's submission system.

To put it even shorter: I think dA should let users be able to submit comics. As in, if they make several pages, they should be able to upload it as a chapter instead of clicking one-by one. Getting half a dozen pages uploaded takes quite an effort to organize in the gallery, not to mention every individual pages can create clutter when you view your gallery. I don't really think folders help because in the end you have your dA page and I really think it's kind of a waste people who look at it only notice your last few comic pages.

Basically, it would be convenient if such a function exists. Eh, I could probably request it or something, but I'd rather someone get there first so that I don't have to. Ever.

Because I'm a very lazy writer when it comes to journals (lazy might be an understatement, in fact it's more than just an afterthought, it's more or less... "I wish the journal would write itself but somehow it sounds dangerous if it really does, so I'll write it for the sake of writing it" kind of thought), I guess the least I could do is 'fess up what I've been doing in the meantime.

Basically what I've been up to is... somehow... a beginner-ish attempt at trying to make a model for MMD ( "beginner" in the sense that "I never modeled and rigged a character specificially for use with MMD before" ). Yeah. But I'm now right at the part I'm really lazy about when it comes to any kind of 3D rigging for animation, that is... weight painting. Bolded for emphasis on how much I'm really lazy about it, that I wish the model would rig itself (again, just a lazy thing). As to what I'm modeling... well, I'll leave that for you to guess. Just to note... while I acknowledge that MMD is a very interesting software to animate (various fan-made) models with, I'm not a fan of the Hatsune Miku brand. But that's where I stop. No feelings of animosity, no hate, just... not my kind of thing. At least the Hatsune Miku brand by itself. I do enjoy seeing crazy and funny stories MMD animators make with the models, however.

I do really think it has potential to go further beyond the realm of fandom, but I guess... what comes from the fans stay with the fans. Okay. Enough said.

Now that it's been a while, I should probably prep myself to doodle some things again. Sometimes self-induced tasks with the only reason you have to do them is self-motivation to complete it (and what some people call "muh OCD" ) makes you miss things that you would've liked doing to pass time (such as doodling things).

A.K.A I just wanted to have some pretty selection of words so that I can always keep myself spouting a word or two. Warning: everything I type here comes out as I think of them, word by word. So there might be some sentences that somehow kind of, you know, loses its meaning or doesn't seem to be connected with each other, sentence by sentence.

Y'see, those with the brightest ideas are almost always those who, to some people, do no appear sane. In most cases they (probably) are, but once they figure out something all hell breaks lose - you know, even you would be happy if you figured out something... and your level of happiness will depend on what you've been trying to figure out. The next thing one would be asking is: Would you go bonkers for that discovery?

If I was a random bypasser who happens to come across Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci or, say, Archimedes at their moment of inspiration, I would most probably think that this guy is insane. But their "insanity" is what have led the world into various discoveries and we have no one to thank but them.

Now, I'm pretty sure we have this thing we call facades. You know, its the "I'm in public and people are staring, I'd better not cause some crazy shit unless I really want the cops to come and get me". Most of the world's culture rests on this philosophy - and it's boring, I know. We're probably not going to see a conference held by the United Nations where everyone there just talk smack with each other and go crazy. It's almost always with a controlled atmosphere. Before we forget, every single leaders of the world are human and they surely need some sort of release. In fact the reason we see world leaders as we see them in the news is because they have to live with a facade, it's their job; even.

So let's get down to what I actually want to say, in the context of creativity - letting loose as much as you can (within reason, of course) is your creativity's raison d'etre. Without your mind unleashing all hell with the help of probably your able hands or mouth to express your thoughts, your creativity will suffer. Many times we see a lot of artworks go within the realm of "How can this guy do this? That certainly did not cross my mind at all!" Y'see, art is where you let your mind loose and have a certain amount of skill to translate what you were thinking using a medium. A medium comes in many different forms, and everyone has a level of skill associated with them that lets them send the message across.

I am of the belief that everyone, of all ages, have a capacity for creativity no matter how shallow or how deep, or how... "varied" they are. As long as it can be justified, you probably have something to deliver to people you want to know. Of course, a message can have different interpretations from the receivers. Like, say, if we measure the reception in terms of interest, some people might be very interested in what you think of the subject you're sending across. Some others might not care, and others might oppose you for that.

And then comes something else - practice. Skillful use of a medium delivers the message that you want, you might want to experiment and practice the way you use a medium in order to transmit the message better. So, as I speak for myself and you (who might not even care that I'm typing this), practice.

... And there. Whew. ... I should probably have a long list of things that I need to practice, such as writing this with even more carefully thought out sentences and content instead of blindly mixing and jumbling "awesome words" just so I can see a wall of text pop out on the screen. But for now, I'm mostly trying to motivate myself to let loose a bit and... yeah, draw.
